What Guests Need to Know
- Watch the film before the meetup, at home, whenever suits you.
- We meet on Google Meet, usually on Wednesday nights.
- Most sessions start at 7:45pm Melbourne time.
- International guests are very welcome. We usually switch to our morning and find a date that works.
- Sessions usually run for 2-3 hours, but people can drop off early.
Do we watch the movie together on the night?
No. Everyone watches the film beforehand in their own time. Movie night is just for hanging out and talking about what we watched.
Where does Movie Club meet?
We meet on Google Meet. Someone will send you the link before the session.
When do you usually meet?
Usually Wednesday nights at 7:45pm Melbourne time. If an international guest is joining, we often flip it to our morning instead and pick a date that works for everyone.
How long does a session go?
Most sessions go for about 2-3 hours, though some are shorter. It is also completely fine to leave early if you need to.
What happens at the start?
Honestly, we usually talk shit for the first 30 minutes. Then we ease into the film.
What is the structure once the film chat starts?
The person who picked the film gives a quick intro: the basic facts, why they put it on the list, their first introduction to it, and whether they had seen it before Movie Club.
After that, each person takes a turn giving a top-level hot take: 1-5 minutes on their personal experience with the film, the vibes, the watch itself, and their first impressions.
Do I need a polished opinion?
Nope. A messy first reaction is perfect. You can talk about what worked, what annoyed you, what surprised you, what you felt, or just the general atmosphere of watching it.
What happens after everyone gives a hot take?
Then it becomes an open conversation for the rest of the session. We follow whatever threads the film gives us: craft, story, performances, politics, nonsense, personal tangents, grudges against third acts, whatever feels alive.
Do guests give a rating?
Yes. At the end, everyone gives the film a star rating out of 5, in increments of half stars.
How is the next film chosen?
We end the session by spinning the wheel for the next Movie Club film.
Can guests return again?
Yes. You just need to suggest a new film to go on the wheel.
